Sri Lanka’s South Coast: Sun, Surf & Seafood

Talia journeyed abroad again recently – this time to sunny Sri Lanka!

If you’re looking for the perfect destination for a week-long (or as long as you have) family getaway, Sri Lanka’s south coast offers a wonderful mix of relaxation and adventure. We recently spent time exploring this beautiful region, and here are the highlights from our trip.

We spent most of our week in Weligama, which is an ideal spot for families. The bay is famous for its gentle waves, making it one of the best places in the world to learn how to surf. When we weren’t in the water, we made sure to fit in some local massages to truly embrace the holiday pace.  There are plenty of accommodation options from beach front Guest Houses and private villas to recognised hotel brands.

One of the best ways to see the surrounding areas is by hopping into a tuk-tuk. We took several day trips to different towns in the area:
– Mirissa to visit the iconic Coconut Tree Hill for the views. We also spent time snorkeling, which was a huge hit with the kids.
– Ahangama to see the Stilt Fisherman is quite the experience. 
– The Sea turtle hatchery at Habaraduwa was a lovely experience where we got to see newly hatched turtles through to big turtles and see the conservation of this beautiful animal by staff that truly care about them.
– Unawatuna which is a lovely bay safe for swims and the dining options along the beachfront is extensive.

We finished our trip with a visit to Galle. Walking through the Old Fort feels like stepping back in time, with its stunning colonial architecture and boutique shops tucked away in the narrow streets. Of course, no family walk through the fort is complete without stopping for a local ice cream to cool down.

The culinary fare in Sri Lanka is delicious with a variety of curries – meat, seafood and vegetables, hoppers, roti’s and the street food… yum!  In addition to the local cuisine, there is a vibrant Western dining scene with all day brunch style cafe restaurants popping up throughout.

Sri Lanka’s south coast delivered everything we hoped for: sun, surf, entertainment, and plenty of culture. It is a fantastic choice for any family looking for their next escape.
