Step behind the silver screen and get a unique look at the making of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies on a guided tour of Wellington’s famous Weta Workshop.
Founded in 1987, Weta Workshop has created the unique special effects, costumes, creatures, props and makeup effects for dozens of TV and movie productions, including Sir Peter Jackson’s award-winning Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
Set off in the morning to the suburb of Miramar where it all began and take a guided tour through a dedicated area of Weta Workshop, where crew members will tell the story of the innovative Weta creative process and show the props and models they have crafted from movies like.
During your tour you’ll see Weta artists at work, watch an exclusive behind-the-scenes film featuring movie secrets and interviews with Weta’s founders, and visit the famous Weta Cave shop with its huge range of unique collectibles and movie merchandise. You‘ll have the opportunity to walk freely though different departments of the manufacturing floor, interacting with examples of Weta Workshop’s artistry and tools. Take photos with full-sized film sculptures and meet Weta Workshop crew and see their work in action!
At the end of your Weta Workshop experience, travel back along the Miramar Peninsula and Wellington harbour to downtown Wellington, arriving at 11.30am.
See the very best of New Zealand’s capital city on a half-day afternoon tour of Wellington’s city and coastline. Travel around the city’s most famous attractions with a local guide and view Wellington’s beautiful waterfront from some of the city’s most picturesque viewpoints.
During your tour you’ll see Wellington’s architectural highlights like the iconic Beehive, New Zealand’s main parliamentary building, and the Old Government Buildings, the largest wooden building in the Southern Hemisphere. Old Saint Paul’s Cathedral is a fine example of Revival Gothic architecture. Visit the beautiful Wellington Botanic Gardens and see the Lady Norwood Rose Gardens and native New Zealand forest, and stand on the the summit of Mount Victoria and enjoy panoramic views of the city, its hills and harbour.
Your tour will take you around the rugged Wellington coastline, where you can discover hidden bays as well as some of Wellington’s most popular beaches. On your way around the Miramar Peninsula and southern bays, you’ll see the picturesque seaside suburb of Seatoun, as well as Pencarrow and the Baring Head Lighthouse. If it’s a clear day, cast your view further and see all the way across Cook Strait to the Kaikoura Ranges in the South Island.
Day 3: Martinborough Gourmet Wine Tour
The rolling green hills of the Wairarapa Valley have enticed visitors for years, and now it’s your turn to see why. Just over an hour from Wellington City, Martinborough seems a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Capital city.
Enjoy a scenic train journey with spectacular views of the Wellington Harbour along the way. You’ll disembark at Featherston Railway Station and have an unforgettable experience with your local guide.
We drive though the countryside to visit four cellar doors, passing rolling vistas of vineyards before our return back to Martinborough to enjoy a delicious local cheese platter and coffee. A sumptuous antipasto platter, wine and sweet treats are waiting for you back in Martinborough Village for lunch.
Day 4: Departure
